There’s something very calming about cleansing my face in the evening. There’s a ritual and a reason to it. You can envision letting go of the day and bringing a sense of closure to it. Although, maybe that’s how tired I am, and I just go into a trance!
Even if you view it as more of chore than anything, taking off your make-up and the remains of the day (think pollution, dust, dirt, sweat, city grime) is so important to help keep your skin looking its very best.
My routine is fairly basic: remove eye make-up, cleanse, tone (admittedly only sometimes) and moisturise. I always use products from the Neal’s Yard Remedies range and tend to change them seasonally depending on my skin’s needs. Their natural, organic ingredients are not only effective but I also like knowing I’m not exposing my skin to unnecessary harsh chemicals or ingredients.
With the Neal’s Yard Remedies eye make-up remover, I simply put a small amount on a cotton disc and swipe over my eyes. This is a very gentle product that even removes waterproof mascara. There’s no burning or stinging if you get any extra product in your eyes. It contains nourishing rose, hydrating aloe vera, and antioxidant rich white tea, all of which help to condition the lashes and moisturise the thinner skin around the eye. As with all of the products from Neal’s Yard Remedies, a little bit goes a long way and the 100ml bottle of eye make-up remover will last you ages. I usually get around six months out of a bottle!
Do you use a separate eye make-up remover product? Stay tuned for step 2 of my routine and another one of my favourite products!

Starting the 10th of September, we’ll be welcoming Susan of Susan’s Soul Connexions for Part 1 of her 5 week course, “Finding Your True Colours”. She beautifully describes what this course has meant to her and others. You’ll also find booking details below –
“Today is all about choices, chances and changes for me and the ladies that are beginning the second part of Finding Your True Colours. A few months ago, I took a chance and created a 5 week course that I knew could bring great changes to others, the reason I knew this is because I had undergone great changes as a result of recognising and becoming aware of my own behaviour, patterns and belief systems. This awareness then created a huge change in me, and this in turn changed my life. So I took a chance and decided to pass this on to others that wanted to create a new way of being, and attract all the thing they wanted into their lives. These ladies, also took a chance on trying out my course, and very soon making new choices brought great changes to them also. This morning we meet again to continue this journey, and I am honoured to be a part of their choices, chances and changes. So if you are wondering why your life is just not getting anywhere fast, or why you’re still getting the same things coming up all the time. The truth is, if you keep on doing what you are doing, you will keep on getting the same results. So today, ask yourself if you have the courage to change your life. If so start with taking a chance on making a new choice.”
With any questions or to book your spot on this course, please contact Susan at firstname.lastname@example.org or www.susanssoulconnexions.com This five week course will start Thursday, 10th September and meet from 7pm-9pm. Cost is €150 and a €50 deposit is required to secure your place. This course is limited to 10 people. All materials will be supplied.
I was just reading an interesting article about how massage therapy can help arthritis sufferers. A number of studies have shown that, in general, massage can help reduce and relieve pain. In addition to receiving regular massage from a qualified therapist who would know how to adjust a treatment accordingly, there are self-massage techniques that can be quite beneficial.
“As part of the study “Rheumatoid arthritis in upper limbs benefits from moderate pressure massage therapy,” conducted by Tiffany Field, PhD, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, participants were taught a self-massage protocol that proved helpful in reducing the pain associated with their arthritis.
The following self-massage was specific to the arm and shoulder:
> Stroking. Stroking from the wrist to the shoulder with moderate pressure, then from the shoulder back to the wrist three times. On the top of the hand, stroke from the wrist to the tips of the fingers and back to the
wrist. Repeat on the underside of the arm.
> Milking. On the top of the arm, cup fingers with thumb on the underside, pulling the flesh between them and gradually moving down to wrist and back up to shoulder from the wrist. Again, use moderate pressure. Repeat on bottom of the arm.
> Friction. Make circular movements with four fingers on top of the arm, moving across the shoulder and down the arm and top of hand. Repeat same on underside of arm.
> Skin rolling. Similar to the milking, squeeze the arm between the fingers and the thumb, then crawl fingers across skin with moderate pressure, first on top of arm and then underside of the arm and top of shoulder.”

Total relaxation is how we would describe our 75 minute Nautilus Signature Facial.
When you arrive, you’ll enjoy a hydrating glass of citrus or herbal infused water while you and your therapist chat about your main skin concerns and goals for your facial. The therapist will review your current skin condition and determine your skin type. Based on this conversation, specific products will be selected to suit your skin type/concerns.
You’ll then sit back and relax while easing your feet into a bowl of warm water for a soothing soak. This helps to relax the body and mind as the focus is on the feet, which can be a very grounding experience and help ease any stress or distractions in your mind.
After this, the therapist will assist you onto the plinth for your facial. The luxurious Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare products selected for your facial will help soothe, hydrate & nourish. Choosing the perfect blend of essential oils and plant extracts make this treatment the ultimate stress reliever as the aromas work on balancing the body, mind, and soul.
You’ll finish your Nautilus Signature Facial experience with an organic herbal tea. This lovely head to toe treatment will leave you feeling rested and refreshed with a beautiful, healthy glow to your skin.
Contact Nautilus on 01 534 0003 or NautilusDublin@gmail.com to book your session of total relaxation.
Jenny has been awarded an internationally recognized diploma in Reflexology, and we’re so happy to be able to offer this complementary therapy at Nautilus!
As described by the Irish Reflexologists’ Institute Ltd., of which Jenny is a member, “Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being. While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well-established, respected and effective therapy.”

Low Back Pain. Did I get your attention? That kind of pain has gotten mine! Like many of our massage clients, I usually suffer from shoulder & neck pain – stress does not nice things to our bodies! Recently though, I’ve become well acquainted with low back pain. It’s distracting & frankly makes me feel older than I should! Massage Therapy can be a very effective way of reducing the pain and improving your mobility. Naturally, I’m a big fan! Learn more here from our friends at the American Massage Therapy Association.
I came across this great skincare tip from the NYR Organic U.S. team (part of the Neal’s Yard Remedies family), “Take the time to give your skin a regular weekly facial massage and you’ll reap the rewards! A simple massage can help revitalize and refresh your complexion and help boost your skin’s natural radiance! Tip: Use a couple drops of the facial oil for your skin type.”
If you’re in need of a facial oil or balm, consider choosing a Soil Association certified product, such as the Neal’s Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm or their Frankincense Facial Oil. As our largest organ, our skin absorbs approximately 60% of what we apply to it. Doesn’t it make sense that we should be applying natural products that are safe & free from nasty chemicals whenever possible?
Here’s a fantastic video that shows you how to do your own facial massage at home, which is particularly helpful for draining excess fluid and congestion during seasonal allergy & hay fever time! If you’d like to talk about your skin concerns, why not book in for a facial at Nautilus? We will customise your treatment using specific products to suit your skin type & needs. Learn more about our facials by visiting the above Treatment Menu tab.
