Massage and Arthritis

Massage and Arthritis

I was just reading an interesting article about how massage therapy can help arthritis sufferers. A number of studies have shown that, in general, massage can help reduce and relieve pain.  In addition to receiving regular massage from a qualified therapist who would know how to adjust a treatment accordingly, there are self-massage techniques that can be quite beneficial.

“As part of the study “Rheumatoid arthritis in upper limbs benefits from moderate pressure massage therapy,” conducted by Tiffany Field, PhD, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, participants were taught a self-massage protocol that proved helpful in reducing the pain associated with their arthritis.

The following self-massage was specific to the arm and shoulder:

> Stroking. Stroking from the wrist to the shoulder with moderate pressure, then from the shoulder back to the wrist three times. On the top of the hand, stroke from the wrist to the tips of the fingers and back to the
wrist. Repeat on the underside of the arm.

> Milking.
On the top of the arm, cup fingers with thumb on the underside, pulling the flesh between them  and gradually moving down to wrist and back up to shoulder from the wrist. Again, use moderate pressure. Repeat on bottom of the arm.

> Friction.
Make circular movements with four fingers on top of the arm, moving across the shoulder and down the arm and top of hand. Repeat same on underside of arm.

> Skin rolling.
Similar to the milking, squeeze the arm between the fingers and the thumb, then crawl fingers across skin with moderate pressure, first on top of arm and then underside of the arm and top of shoulder.”

TMJ Disorder Massage

TMJ Disorder Massage

Massage therapy can be extremely effective in relieving the pain and discomfort experienced in the face, jaw, teeth and ears if you suffer from TMJ Disorder.  Jenny has trained with an American massage therapist in a technique designed to significantly ease the symptoms of TMJ Disorder. As the team at WebMD describes:

“Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear.  It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide
  • Problems when you try to open your mouth wide
  • Jaws that get “stuck” or “lock” in the open- or closed-mouth position
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew. This may or may not be painful.
  • A tired feeling in your face
  • Trouble chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite — as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly
  • Swelling on the side of your face

You may also have toothaches, headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).”

If you’ve been diagnosed with TMJ Disorder, book in for your massage sessions & get some much needed relief!

*Recent feedback from a client who came in for a TMJ Disorder massage,”.. over all doing great and my jaw is not in as much pain since my TMJ. I wish my dentist had known about this treatment method! Look forward to my next treatment!”
