Facial Massage

I came across this great skincare tip from the NYR Organic U.S. team (part of the Neal’s Yard Remedies family), “Take the time to give your skin a regular weekly facial massage and you’ll reap the rewards! A simple massage can help revitalize and refresh your complexion and help boost your skin’s natural radiance! Tip: Use a couple drops of the facial oil for your skin type.”

If you’re in need of a facial oil or balm, consider choosing a Soil Association certified product, such as the Neal’s Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm or their Frankincense Facial Oil. As our largest organ, our skin absorbs approximately 60% of what we apply to it. Doesn’t it make sense that we should be applying natural products that are safe & free from nasty chemicals whenever possible?

Here’s a fantastic video that shows you how to do your own facial massage at home, which is particularly helpful for draining excess fluid and congestion during seasonal allergy & hay fever time! If you’d like to talk about your skin concerns, why not book in for a facial at Nautilus? We will customise your treatment using specific products to suit your skin type & needs. Hay Fever and Seasonal Allergies

Hay Fever and Seasonal Allergies

Today we’re talking about summer ailments, particularly hay fever & seasonal allergies.

Did you know? Hay fever is an autoimmune system reaction to pollen. Popular advice is to eat local honey to help build up your body’s familiarity and resistance to the effects of local pollen.  Ideally, you’ll want to find pure, cold-filtered honey for the most benefits. Check out the amazing Hiveshare program at Brookfield Farm: http://www.brookfield.farm/pages/brookfield-farm-hiveshare

For the other tips below, we are recommending Soil Association certified products from Neal’s Yard Remedies who strongly believes, “Health is the most important thing to us. When formulating and making our products, we follow the precautionary principle – which means not using anything we believe could cause you, or the planet harm.”

Supplements are also an important treatment for hay fever.  Vitamin C helps boost the immune system.  The Neal’s Yard Remedies Super-Antioxidant Boost supplement protects us from free radical damage which may lower immune function and make us susceptible to hay fever.  Prices vary widely when it comes to supplements.  This is because of the filler material.  Many other capsules are coated in a material that won’t break down as it passes through the body & can pass entirely through the body without releasing any benefits.  Neal’s Yard Remedies supplements and vitamins are all plant based.  Their Vitamin C is Ester C based, which is slow release and much easier on the digestive system.

Also with hay fever, people often suffer from itchy eyes.  Again, Neal’s Yard Remedies has two amazing products which can help greatly, their White Tea Eye Gel and White Tea Facial Mist.  They have the Eyebright herb which stops the itching around the eye area. These are cooling products but can be kept in the fridge for that extra boost of cooling relief to further calm & ease the body’s inflammatory response.

For those who suffer with dry, itchy throats during allergy season, the Elderberry Syrup is great. It is high in Vitamin C and soothes the itchy dryness.  It has a fruit flavour, and you just need to add a little bit into a glass of water or other beverage.

The Summer Tea is also great for hay fever/allergy season.  You can enjoy it hot or cold and even add a teaspoon of your local honey! This also contains the Eyebright herb as well as nettle, which is anti-inflammatory.  It also has peppermint, which many people find cooling.

Use the aromatherapy blend “Cleanse” oil to help you breathe easier as it refreshes a room

Do you suffer from eczema or psoriasis and address these conditions through dietary means? If so, the Calendula or Stellaria Cream can be a great support.  The Calendula Cream is better suited for cracked, weepy skin and the Stellaria Cream is great for soothing itchy, red, unbroken skin.

If you’re interested in any of the products mentioned above, contact us on 01 534 0003 or via NautilusDublin@gmail.com. I’m off to brew a cup of Summer Tea for a bit of relief!

Cheers & sneezes,

My Reiki Experience

My Reiki Experience

I’ll be honest. . I know generally about Reiki, but I’ve never had a treatment before and had no clue what to expect or what the experience would be like.

As a massage & beauty therapist, my work tends to be focused on anatomy and physiology of the body, the skin and it’s condition. As a holistic therapist, I fully believe that our health can be affected positively by balance or negatively by imbalance between the body, mind and spirit.

I could see how Reiki would fit into all of this as it’s a healing, energy technique, but it’s not been a treatment I’ve been drawn to before. However, I’m never one to shy away from learning new things, especially when I’m receiving a treatment!

Let’s start with the basics.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a hands-on healing technique which is used to bring the body back into balance thus promoting good health and vitality. It is excellent for eliminating stress, insomnia and headaches to name a few. Whether you have health issues or not, all clients benefit from the deep relaxing effects it promotes within the body and mind. It is suitable for everyone including the elderly, pregnant woman, and children

Other basics:

1. You lay on a plinth, the usual type of treatment bed or table, all cosy and warm under blankets.
2. You stay fully dressed.
3. You listen to the music or completely zone out during the treatment.
4. Periodically, the therapist will rest her hands on you – Maria gently held my feet and placed her hands on my head.
5. She didn’t speak, sing, chant, pray out loud. (again, I wasn’t entirely sure what would happen)

At the start of the treatment, I was very aware of myself. My breathing was shallow and coming from high up in my chest instead of deeper breaths starting in the stomach. I felt tense from my head to my toes. These are key signs that my stress levels were up, and while I knew that they were, I didn’t realise the affect on my body up until then.  I decided that instead of listening to Maria’s quiet movements around the bed that I would focus on my breathing and on letting go of some of that tension.

As the treatment went on, I felt myself becoming more and more relaxed. Maria is an amazing therapist who brings a sense of calm with her. She created an atmosphere in the room where I was able to trust her and felt safe. By doing so, I could completely let go and in fact, I fell soundly asleep!

After the treatment, I felt very hazy and a bit disconnected from myself but very relaxed and very much at peace.

It only took about 10 minutes for me to feel fully “back”. For the rest of the day, I felt calmer and much less stressed. It was so nice to be able to fully switch off, which has such a restorative effect on the body, mind and spirit.

I would absolutely have another Reiki treatment, and I’m looking forward to Maria’s return to Nautilus on Saturday, 27th of June, 10am-2pm and on Friday, 10th July, 4-8pm. Book your appointment with Maria by contacting her on 086 384 5971 or Nautilus on 01 534 0003.

Maria is a Reiki/Seichem Master practitioner with almost 10 years experience of one to one practice and teaching. She is also an avid & talented photographer and many of the photos you see on her Crystal Giraffe Reiki Facebook page are ones she’s taken!  Crystal Giraffe is the name of her Reiki practice. She chose the name because of her love of crystals and giraffes!
